Here is our advice on the basic steps each financial aid applicant should follow:

File a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after January 1, 2008. Indicate the University of New Hampshire on the FAFSA by using the Title IV school code of 002589. Obtain the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet from our office, your guidance counselor, or on the World Wide Web. The financial aid application must be received by the federal processor on (or before) March 1, 2008.

You do not have to wait for your tax returns to be completed before you file. You are allowed to make reasonable estimates.

Be sure to observe state grant or scholarship program deadlines. NH residents may apply for a NH Incentive Grant by completing the 2008-2009 FAFSA.

Check with guidance counselors about local scholarships and national scholarship competitions.

Graduate students must complete a Graduate Student Aid/Credit Verification Form. Check with the UNH Graduate School for additional sources of assistance.

If you are coming to visit UNH, feel free to make an appointment to speak with a Financial Aid Counselor.

Keep records of all materials submitted to the college or the Federal processor so you have a record of what you have sent.

Request a certificate of mailing at the post office to make sure all documents reach the proper destination on time. You then have an official record of your mailings.

Make sure to respond to any and all inquiries and requests for documentation as quickly as possible. Check Blackboard for the most up-to-date information on the status of your file. Failure to do so may result in a delay in receiving your financial aid package.

Follow the Financial Aid Calendar!

Read all materials from the financial aid office carefully. If you have questions, ask our staff!

Inform the UNH Business Services Office of any outside scholarships, grants or other assistance you will be receiving.
